Welcome to Human Milk CIC.

 

We promote the Science of Human Milk, in support of parents and tiny humans globally.

Human Milk Community Interest Company is an award winning independent non-profit organisation, founded by parents for parents. We use traditional and innovative advertising and marketing practices to share the science of human milk and breastfeeding. 

 

We are working towards a world in which everyone understands why human milk and breastfeeding matter so much to all of us. 

We call for positive societal engagement globally to support breastfeeding mothers and future mothers who want to breastfeed. 

 

We call for a global upscaling of our societies' perceptions of women’s breasts and bodies. Our bodies are beautiful, but they are also brilliant. We carry a key to the health of our species. 
 

We call for respect, equity, and knowledge.

We believe that the responsibility for a mother reaching her breastfeeding goals is shared with her family, community and the healthcare professionals she turns to for support, and does not rest on the mother alone.

Our Education work and Clothing brand won the Vegan category and was runner up in the Nature category.

Winners in other categories include Sir David Attenborough, VivoBarefoot, Triodos Bank and A Plastic Planet.

   A world in which women's bodies are understood and respected.   

 

   A world in which the global infant and maternal mortality rate linked to infant feeding is dramatically reduced.

   

   A world in which the value of breastfeeding is understood, and women receive the practical and emotional support they need to define and successfully reach their own breastfeeding goals.

   Where breastfeeding support services are adequately funded and available regardless of where parents live or their income.

   Where human donor milk is easily accessible to every family who needs it as an alternative.

Our aim is long term behaviour change

We are committed to working towards profound culture shifts and believe that widespread knowledge of the science of human milk is a key to a culture's true understanding and respect of women's bodies, infant and maternal health, and how much breastfeeding matters.

Our multi-media resources are being used for education and training in 35 countries and 18 languages, as well as by millions of parents on and offline.

 

We are not a breastfeeding support organisation. Rather, our work to update public perception of the value of human milk and breastfeeding aims to empower parents as well as organisations working to improve life for them. You'll find links to skilled breastfeeding support on our Find Support page.

This is far reaching, and can include many aspects of parenthood and childhood, from breastfeeding support, to healthcare and medical provision, to employment law and global sustainability policies.

We want to see...

    Positive attitudes to breastfeeding in the general public.

  Widespread understanding of what breasts are biologically meant for.

        Society, including work places, being supportive of breastfeeding and expressing mothers.

 

  Society being respectful of all mothers’ feeding choices. No-one can know what’s in a bottle, or what that mother has been through. It could be expressed or donor human milk, and parents who formula feed are doing so from an educated place, and for personal reasons that must be respected.

       Babies commonly seen being breastfed in public, in TV programs, movies and visual media.

 

  In other words, breastfeeding being normal and valued.

An intrinsic part of supporting women is supporting their right to bodily sovereignty. We respect women who do not want to breastfeed. This is their decision, based on their lived realities, their needs and the needs of their family.

We respect every women's body and choice, unequivocally.

Our Education Movement

We use traditional and innovative marketing practices; design, fine Art, photography, film and fashion as vehicles for the dissemination of information on the known components of Human Milk, and on the science of how breastfeeding works. Who is using our resources?

Since our 'Human Milk, Tailor-Made for Tiny Humans' advert was launched in 2017, it has been viewed over 8.5 million times online & thousands offline, and it has been our honour to receive hundreds of requests from all corners of the globe to use our materials for education.

Much of the creation of this website and our education resources have been supported by funding raised through our clothing brand, Human Milk Clothing & Accessories.

We produce ethically and sustainably sourced clothes that happen to be easy to breastfeed in, along with gorgeous accessories, all adorned with designs inspired by the molecules in human milk.

So what are we up to?

Education

  • Providing an ongoing response to organisations and individuals requesting our resources for training and education. We are proactively growing the distribution and availability of our current education resources to more local and global organisations. 

Global

  • Our advert is available with subtitles in 18 languages. We are currently translating our advert and infographic into Chinese in association with two organisations; YIYN Education who provide breastfeeding education in 140 cities in China, and Jinquan Breastfeeding Care at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Capital Medical University - Beijing Children’s Hospital.

Website

  • Regularly updating our website and uploading new resources, to continue to make the scientific information available freely, and continuing to work with scientists to stay abreast of new developments in human milk research.

Schools

This project has been slowed due to the Coronavirus outbreak. We remain committed to resuming when it becomes safe again.

  • We are developing a pilot for a human milk science GCSE and A Level Biology module in the UK, in collaboration with the Science Department at Llandaff Cathedral School, Cardiff, Wales. Once this pilot is completed, we will make it available to a larger audience of students and continue to work with feedback to improve it. Several schools across the UK have already expressed an interest in being part of this next phase, and we will put out a call for any more schools who are interested in participating as soon as we are ready.

  • The intention is to work with the schools involved to have this module integrated into the UK Combined Science National Curriculum for Biology.

Clothing

  • Whilst we continue to offer a range of tops and accessories on our shop, we are seeking partnerships with both mainstream fashion brands and Mother & Baby clothing and accessories brands to license our patterns, help us spread the science and raise funds for our education work.

Merchandise

  • With emphasis on diversity to reflect more UK and global families, and diversity of feeding methods to include expressing, night feeding, feeding out and about etc. With this footage, we will edit one version of similar length to our current advert for educational settings, and several shorter TV ready ads that focus on one aspect of human milk each, to be placed on social media and made available for education too (global).

  • Note: We will work towards the short adverts being shown on TV. The cost for this is prohibitive, at approximately £1 million for a 4 week mainstream UK TV ad campaign so our focus will be social media first. If you have a spare £million, or can place these ads on TV pro bono, please get in touch and we'll make it happen straight away!

  • We are looking for investment for our clothing brand. Our clothing brand has the potential to fund all our other activities, reaching and supporting parents both via the clothing & accessories themselves, and via the education movement that the brand can then fund as it grows.

  • Produced using the new footage and stills. For our educational materials database (global), for online and offline campaigns.

  • Partnering with a global advertising partner to coordinate and execute these campaigns; online (social media) nationwide, and offline in cities in the UK (billboards, buses, bus stop posters, magazines.)

  • We also have plans to use less traditional methods to spread the word such as Street Art. We have been given a wall in Bristol... Watch this space!

  • Realising international campaigns in chosen countries. There may be demand for country specific adverts and materials that are sensitive to the culture and demographics of that country.

  • Development of a website section where parents, healthcare professionals and patrons can tell their story and pledge their commitment and support towards breastfeeding and Human Milk CIC. This would become a global patchwork of mothers and fathers from all cultures supporting and learning from each other.

  • We will also highlight the stories of women who wanted to breastfeed and did not get the help they needed to succeed. Their stories can help the world to understand the challenges and barriers mothers face, and help future mothers to experience a successful breastfeeding journey.

  • Supplying hospitals and local councils. We would like to offer educational resources and human milk merchandise (mugs, pens, water bottles etc) pointing to our website and normalising human milk and breastfeeding in the environments new parents visit for perinatal appointments.
